The Giant Manta Rays of Revillagegidos Trip Report |
|
|
|
I just got back from an awesome trip on the
Solmar to the Revillagegidos. After a short stay in
Cabo San
Lucas I departed on April 20th and just got back last
Saturday! I am still working on the videos. They will be
up on the new site very soon. We will be heading back
there next April. If you ever wanted a chance to dive
with Sharks, Mantas and Humpbacks this is a
MUST DO
trip! Lawrence Groth CEO
The Revillagigedos archipelago is
located
approximately 270 miles south of Cabo San Lucas,
Mexico. It is often referred to as the Mexican
Galapagos. The main island called Socorro is usually
the name most people identify with the
Revillagigedos .
It is a tough name for most non Spanish speaking
gringos, but when properly pronounced it sounds
like "Re-via-hee-hay-dohs". In my opinion the
Revillagigedos is the best location in the world to dive
with Giant Manta Rays.
The Manta Ray is one of if not the most graceful
creature in the sea. The Manta Ray can also grow
quite large with wingspans reaching over 20 feet. The
Manta Rays also have the largest brain of all fish
species. They are very social
creatures and seem to
actually enjoy interacting with divers. Being a plankton
feeder the Manta ray is absolutely harmless to
humans and also has no real predators other than
man.
Isla San Benedicto is a volcanic island with its
most recent
eruption occurring in 1952. . We encountered
hammerheads, tiger shark, white tip reef sharks,
dolphin, and multiple Mantas on nearly every dive.
This can also be a great spot to encounter whale
sharks.
Roca Partida (Parted Rock) is
not so much of an
island and rather just a big rock in the middle of
nowhere. This unique dive site has everything. You
can see Hammerheads, Dolphin, Manta Ray, several
species of sharks and even Humpback Whales!
The marine life here is so abundant that you can do 8
dives in 2 days and see different animal action on
each dive. You can see dolphin and hammerhead
sharks on one dive and then see Mantas and
Humpbacks on the next. You never know what you are
going to get. You just know it is going to be good!
Isla Socorro is the largest island in the
Revillagigedos. Isla Socorro is most famous for its
Humpback
whales. During whale season November to April there
is a very large population of Humpbacks here.
The Mexican navy has a rather
prominent base on the island and all vessels visiting
the islands must stop and check in to show permits
and register. This can take an hour or two and
shortens one dive day but it is just one of the ways the
islands stay protected and Mexico keeps tabs on who
is there and what they are doing. The Revillagigedos
is a marine reserve and fishing both commercial and
sport has been banned there for about 5 years now.
